Lucy’s fur: A brindle colour story
Most Labradors come in the classic trio: yellow, black, and chocolate. Easy. Predictable. The kind of genetics chart you could sketch on a napkin.
But every now and then, nature decides to have a little fun!
Enter the brindle Labrador — the rarest member of the Lab family. No crossbreeding. No mystery ancestry. Just genetics doing what genetics does best: surprising us with something magical, thanks to a tiny recessive gene quietly hiding in the background…
Labrador coat colour is usually explained by the B and E genes — the ones responsible for black, chocolate, and yellow. But brindle doesn’t play by those rules. Brindle lives at the K locus, where three versions of the gene exist:
K — dominant black (the “solid colour” boss)
ky — allows other patterns
kbr — the brindle gene (the shy one)
Most Labs are K/K or K/ky, which means solid coats all around. But some Labs quietly carry kbr — and you’d never know it by looking at them!

For brindle to appear, a puppy must inherit kbr from both parents. It’s like a secret handshake between genes!
If both parents carry one copy of kbr, about one in four puppies could show brindle. But real litters vary — sometimes none, sometimes a surprise handful!
In Lucy’s litter, there was her and one little brother out of nine puppies. The pairing of brindle mum Brenda and yellow dad Isaac resulted in two little brindle delights, with golden‑flecked magic written quietly in their DNA! 🖤💛
